Cold Barn Morris Dancers

morris dancers

Morris Dancing is ancient English folk dancing with its roots in pre-Christian, earth-based traditions. The dancers begin their season by dancing in the sunrise on May Morning -- rain or shine -- to bring the summer and ensure the prosperity of the community for the coming year. Centuries ago this would have meant that they were dancing for good crops and healthy, fertile livestock. In some dances they strike the ground with sticks to wake the earth, all the time sending the spirits of winter away with the bells on their shins. The music of Morris is English folk, played on traditional instrumentation such as melodeons, fiddles, fifes and drums. The dances hail from village traditions in the Cotswold and Welsh border regions of England.

Cold Barn Morris has been around for 14 years and, though based in Hamilton, has membership reaching from Scarborough to Kitchener. Starting Thursday Sept. 13th, we are running a class for beginners at the Latvian Centre in Hamilton (16 Queen St. N.) from 8 -10:00 p.m. If you're interested, please contact our Squire at leora@mountaincable.net or call 416 938 5012 or 905 520 4968.

Car-pooling can be arranged from as far away as Toronto or Cambridge if required.

Performing at 1:30PM.  Workshops offered at 11:30 & 2:30.
